Found throughout the world except for Antarctica, ground squirrels typically live in dry, hot climates, though they also hold a presence in Alaska and surrounding Canadian territories. The Western and Central United States are home to a range of species who favor varying types of habitation. Generally, ground squirrels enjoy tunneling around some natural form of cover, such as shrubs, and avoid wetlands and dense forests. Living in colonies, ground squirrels can dig tunnels capable of housing dozens of their kind.
