Wildlife Removal in Salem, New Hampshire

People from all around come to experience Salem, New Hampshire—especially our town forests, where you can observe local wildlife. If you live in Salem, you know you don't have to go anywhere to observe wildlife. We can look outside and see various birds, squirrels, chipmunks, and rabbits on any given day. At night, raccoons, opossums, bats, rats, and mice roam the area looking for food, water, and shelter.

Occasionally, wildlife makes its way into our homes. That's when they go from being cute to being a nuisance. Wild animals trying to settle indoors can mean damages to your home. At Critter Control, we get many calls for problems caused by raccoons, rats, mice, squirrels, bats, and birds. We handle these calls with a thorough inspection, removal, and damage repair.

Raccoon Removal in Salem

Raccoons in Salem are just like raccoons everywhere—masked, mischievous bandits. They come out at night to travel the neighborhood looking for food. They use their nimble hands and fingers to open trash cans, feed bags, and dumpsters. They raid gardens, dig holes in the sod searching for insects, and crawl through a pet door if given a chance.

Raccoons like to climb and build nests in attics, crawlspaces, chimneys, and the space under decks. Raccoons are destructive, tearing drywall and insulation off walls, chewing wires, and scratching wood flooring and beams. Raccoons leave odorous feces and urine in piles near their nest.

Because they can harbor diseases, it is never a good idea to try and remove a raccoon by yourself. Let professionals do the dirty work.

Inspection: Our experts figure out how the raccoon gets in and out of your home, its food sources, and where it is nesting. They also give you an assessment of the damages caused by the nuisance wildlife.

Removal: We remove raccoons using our safe and humane CritterSafe traps. We remove nests, feces, and urine too.

Repair: After removing the animal, we implement exclusion methods like sealing all access points to your home. We screen vents and chimneys and enclose crawlspaces. We also fix damaged wires, replace insulation and drywall, and fence gardens. Using proper storage for trash and pet feed will help prevent future raccoon problems.

Raccoons aren’t the only nighttime menace in Salem, however. We also have rodents.

Rats and Mice Removal in Salem

The most common rats and mice in Salem are the Norway rat and house mice. You must recognize the signs of rodent activity. Look for gnaw marks on the edges of doors, baseboards, cabinets, and ledges. They will chew on just about all materials, even metals. Wires, drywall, insulation, papers, and curtains are good examples of items they find in your home.

Rodents leave a trail of feces and urine in their travels. Rats and mice will eat anything, from garden crops to junk food to feces of other animals. If you find grocery items in your pantry opened and scattered, wood shavings, or scat, you likely have a rat or mouse problem. Because both creatures multiply quickly, it’s crucial to call a nuisance wildlife control operator to avoid an infestation.

No rodent problem is too big or too small for our experts.

Inspection: We follow the trails all rodents leave behind to discover nesting areas, food and water sources, and how they get in and out of your home.

Removal: We use humane trapping methods to get rid of nuisance rats and mice causing damage to your home.

Repair: Common repairs we make include repairing gnawed wires and wood, replacing insulation and drywall used for nests, and fixing broken screens on vents and chimneys. To exclude them from returning in the future, we seal every hole, even the tiniest, through which rats and mice can squeeze. We help you make groceries inaccessible and clear debris from your yard where rodents like to hide.

The squirrel, also a rodent, is another nuisance wildlife that will invade your home if given the opportunity.

Squirrel Removal in Salem

Tree squirrels, like the gray, red, and fox squirrels in Salem, are thriving. Their population seems to be growing. This, along with our continued development of land in the area, leaves them fewer places to scavenge for the fruits, nuts, and other foods they desire.

While cute to watch, especially when they raid a birdfeeder or stuff their cheeks with apples, squirrels can cause damage to your property. They like to build nests in attics, vents, pipes, and chimneys, which can cause fire hazards. They bring the outdoors in, hoarding their finds near their nests.

Squirrels are quick and can climb anything, from trees to spouting. While in your home, they may chew wires, make holes in your walls, and leave feces and urine. If you hear something running back and forth in your ceiling, it may be a squirrel. Because squirrels can carry diseases, call an expert to solve the problem.

Inspection: When inspecting for squirrels, we identify all food resources. We look at their travel routes to locate every entry point into your home. After finding their nest, we assess damages.

Removal: Most squirrels will leave your home often during the day to collect food. While out, we do our work. If you have a stubborn squirrel that refuses to go, we use our safe and humane traps.

Repair: We see varied damages. We replace chewed screens on chimneys with screens that cannot be damaged and repair holes in drywall. We fix wiring, clean their mess, and can apply a sanitation treatment. For exclusion, we seal all holes and cracks that give squirrels access to your home. We trim tree limbs and can install tree and roof barriers. Removing bird feeders, debris, and other squirrel attractants prevents them from staying too long on your property.

Another mammal you don’t want staying too long is a bat.

Bat Removal in Salem

New Hampshire bats include the big brown, Eastern red, hoary, little, Northern long-eared, and silver-haired bats, to name a few. Just like you don't want to encounter a bat, they don't want to meet you either. You will rarely see a bat. They are nocturnal insect-eaters with two major flaws: They are noisy and poop a lot.

Bat guano is heavy and can cause boards to sag or break depending on the weight piled in one area. Guano is also known to grow molds spores that travel through vents and throughout your home. If inhaled, you may get a respiratory illness. These mold spores are also on the bat's body because while roosting upside down, bats continue to poop, which runs over the bat's body.

Bats in New Hampshire are a protected species due to diseases threatening their existence. Also, they cannot be moved or even harassed during the maternity season, which usually runs from May to August. Bats are incredibly beneficial wildlife when they are not being a nuisance.

Wildlife experts should be the only ones to remove bats from your attic, shed, barn, or other structure.

Inspection: We look for a few specific things during inspections: the cracks and holes bats are using to enter your space, food sources, and damages caused by bat guano.

Removal: We use one-way doors that allow bats to fly out of your attic but not fly back in. We can also physically remove bats using professional gloves and equipment.

Repair: Removing bat guano and applying a sanitation treatment is a priority. We also seal all cracks and holes through which a bat can fit. We leave you with a list of tips on reducing bat activity, like eliminating food resources.

Birds are another flying nuisance wildlife in Salem. We have lots of them.

Bird Removal in Salem

There are many bird species in New Hampshire, from robins and woodpeckers to sparrows, starlings, and crows. That’s why bird watching is such a great hobby. Unfortunately, birds build nests in places on your home that could be a fire hazard, like eaves and chimneys. Also, they poop a lot. While there is no point in trapping and releasing birds, there are ways we can help keep them from being a nuisance.

Inspection: Our experts locate all possible openings birds may use to nest. They also assess damages, which may include holes in siding, soffits, fascia, and gutters.

Removal: We can remove nests and implement exclusion methods.

Repair: We can replace any damaged items on your home, install roof barriers, and trim trees. We also put screens on gutters, chimneys, eaves, vents, and other openings that need to stay open. Holes that can be sealed get sealed.

So when I went to have my insulation replaced I figured out that I had a critter problem that was beyond anything I was aware of. Not wanting to waste time I decided to call a professional and these guys were really good from day one. From the gentleman who gave the estimate to both of the guys that came out and did the work there was great communication and they were very effective at what they did. One little thing got missed and all it took was one text message and somebody was out the next day to take care of it. They always text me when they're on their way or going to be at the house and they let me know what they found along with photographs. My first thought when they gave me the quote was wow that was a lot of money and I didn't want to spend that much and now that I've had them do the service I feel like it's worth every penny and it's actually pretty damn reasonable considering the number of times that they come out and all the things that they do take care of.

I had an issue with squirrels getting into a small section of roofing without access from the attic or inside of the home. Critter control was a huge help in solving the issue, especially thanks to Brandon and Nate. Ended up catching 3 squirrels living in the roof plus they seal the entrance point after all is said and done. I would absolutely recommend critter control, Brandon and Nate did a stellar job.

Dominick was very friendly and he consistently put on his shoe covers each time he entered the house. He looked over every inch of the storage room where we thought the animal was and did a walk around the yard to see if there was evidence of entry. He was very thorough. He did not find any animal at that time. He said he would leave a trap and review the outside area of the house over the next week. It was the next day that the smell in our storage room indicated that the animal had died. We followed the small and discovered a dead bird in an open storage bin. I would highly recommend Dominick for 'Critter Control'. Thank you, Valerie

your representative (Dominic) was very friendly and quickly removed the dying raccoon from our outdoor window-well. He also shared information with us regarding raccoons on their behavior, what they liked/disliked, and provided information on how to disinfect the area the raccoon had been trapped in for a couple of days. I'd rate him 9 stars if I could. -pja
